Episode 9: Hot for Harlot (28:11)

YKnit Episode 9, "Hot for Harlot"
Does Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, The Yarn Harlot, need an introduction? Author of five books (so far). Founder of the Knitting Olympics and Tricoteuses Sans Frontières/Knitters Without Borders (who have raised over $430,000 for Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders since 2004). And, perhaps the most-read of the knitting bloggerati. If you don't already know her, stop reading this right now and run over to yarnharlot.ca to catch up. We'll wait here.

Lucky for you, dear listeners, we have, not one, but two conversations with Stephanie. In April, she and Stephen sat down on the last night of BMFA's sock camp to talk about (what else?) knitting. More recently, she gave Mike and Stephen an exclusive and very exciting announcement.

Contest
We have two signed copies of the Harlot's latest book, Things I Learned from Knitting (Whether I Wanted To or Not). Tell us what you're doing on Worldwide Knit In Public Day, June 14. (It's also Stephanie's 40th birthday!) From the submissions, we'll randomly choose two winners.

Y Knit? C'est fantastique!

We use snippets of the following songs in this episode:

  • "Lover" Richard Marino and his Orchestra from The Magic Beat (Liberty, 1960)
  • "Nine to Five" Player Piano from Player Piano - Country Hits (Tandem Music Group, 1993)
  • "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" The Ink Spots from Swing High! Swing Low! (Past Perfect / Finetunes, 1998)
  • "Stephanie" The Partridge Family from Come on Get Happy! The Very Best of the Partridge Family (Arista, 2005)
  • "Nitty Gritty" Jocelyne from Jocelyne (Polydor, 1965)

I will take the bus (eco-friendly!) downtown and sit with other knitters on the lawn of the Texas State Capitol in my lawn chair. Sadly, that's not a place where they serve beer.

Another great podcast. You make me smile during my pain-in-the-#$%^ commute. I knew knitting could save the world!
On WWKIP day I'll be knitting my way through who knows how many small children singing at my daughter's voice recital.

OK, you've done it again. Humor and tears. What the Harlot said about gay knitters and people who perhaps are on the fringe is one of the smartest things I've heard. How can you look at competency in your lap and not have that transfer, little by little to yourself. BRILLIANT.

I know it seems a bit overboard, but thanks for doing this. You're amazing and I so appreciate it!

Knitting in Public Day (I don't want to be included in the contest, not that it isn't a worthy contest). I knit in public every day on the bus and train on the way into work and on the way home....trying to do my part!

Bravo again on an incredible job.

Stephanie and you guys made my day today!!!! Everybody in the train was staring at me when I had to laugh :-)

Excellent podcast. Saturday is also the annual Circle Parade at University Circle in Cleveland, OH. So I will be seating at the sidewalk, watching the parade go by, and knitting. It is an awesome parade, quite international and growing every year.

Great job again!!! I have a spinning guild meeting on Saturday where I'll be "spinning" and then a baby shower to go to where I'll be knitting!!! The grandma-to-be is a knitter, so I don't think I'll get into too much trouble!

    Love your podcast!
On KIP day, I will knit in public here in Norfolk VA, then get on a plane to France and knit on the plane if they let me. While listening to various knitting podcasts.

    Hope I win,

I have nothing on the calendar so far, but I'll be knitting in public if I can. I don't get out in public every day... would a lawn chair at the end of the driveway count?

It is tooooo danged hot to knit in public in June in Yuma. It will be 110 freakin' degrees outside! ALL OF US STAY INSIDE OUR HOUSES AND DON"T GO ANYWHERE!!! Geez, I wish I lived somewhere else! Plus I just had rotator cuff surgery and I am on a diet of donut holes, vicodin, and diet Dr. Pepper. How long until our next sock camp? You are my favorite podcast!

posted by: Nancy on Wed, 6/11 12:45 AM EDT

Oh, how did I know that whole "bush stimulus" bit was going to go there?

I'm not sure if I'll do much KIP'ing on the day or not, since I'll be coming off an overnight shift and then heading to my friend's ordination. Possibly at the post-ordination bash, though. I'll only have a week left to finish my second kilt hose, after all.

Per my earlier comment, I DID knit on the plane to France. The flight attendant admired my scarf, and said that she was a knitter too. So I came up to the front and showed her the lacy Butterflies and Bees socks I also had with me. She loved the pattern and admired my socks profusely! I got about 10 inches of the scarf done.

    Best wishes,
    Brenda

I've heard several interviews with the Harlot and I love that this one didn't cover old, familiar topics. I had a lot of fun listening.

As for the big day, I spent much of the day teaching, so I brought my knitting to class and worked on it in front of my students while they worked on their compositions.
